Schedule for Nancy Clarvit Design Week 2011

The University of Maryland Department of Art is proud to host the second annual Nancy Clarvit Design Week. This week's presenters and activities promise to enrich the Design Program within the University of Maryland. All events will be held in the Art/Sociology building (ASY) room 2322 unless otherwise noted.


Monday, February 28

10 a.m: Author, educator and filmmaker Andrea Marks will present a short workshop about her book, Writing for Visual Thinkers: A Guide for Artists and Designers, now in its second edition, about the importance of writing and design.

11:30 a.m: Andrea Marks presents her documentary Freedom on the Fence, a film about the history and social, political and cultural significance of Polish posters. Discussion to follow. Lunch provided.


Tuesday, March 1

11:30 a.m: Mike Yuen, UMD alum and Principal and Executive Creative Director of MK, a creative strategic and marketing agency in NYC, will talk about his journey from his time at UMD to where he is today. Discussion to follow. Lunch provided.


2 p.m: Portfolio reviews with Mike Yuen. By appointment only.


Wednesday, March 2

11:30 a.m: Come with your questions to the Department of Art Design Advisory Committee presentation about what makes for a successful portfolio review, job interview, and resume. Lunch provided.


3 p.m: Casey Hafner of New Leaf Paper Company will discuss the differences designers should know when choosing paper and what makes New Leaf such an innovative, sustainable paper company.


Thursday, March 3

11:30 a.m: Ken Tanabe, UMD alum and Art Director for Imaginary Forces, will discuss his work at one of the leading motion design firms in the country. Discussion to follow. Lunch provided.


5:30 p.m: Keynote by Luba Lukova, internationally known illustrator and designer. Ms. Lukova's lecture is free and open to the public. Location: ASY 2309.


6-8 p.m: Exhibit reception for Ms. Lukova's work. Location: Herman Maril Gallery, first floor ASY


Friday, March 4

10 a.m.-3 p.m: Exclusive workshop for Department of Art students with Luba Lukova. Lunch provided.


Saturday, March 5

10 a.m.-1 p.m: UMD’s AIGA student chapter is hosting a Portfolio Review Day. Many professional designers will be unhand to give feedback on student portfolios. Click here for registration information. Location: Margaret Brent Room, Stamp Student Union.


1:15 p.m: Speaker Portfolio Presentation. Location: Design Studio / ASY 2322


2 p.m: Portfolio Review Reception. Location: Herman Maril Gallery, First Floor ASY
