Luba Lukova Exhibit

The University of Maryland Department of Art is proud to announce an exhibit of Luba Lukova’s work in conjunction with the Nancy Clarvit Design Week 2011. Ms. Lukova will be giving a keynote note as part of her visit to campus.

Keynote: 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 3 in the Art/Sociology Building, Room 2309.

Exhibit reception: 6-8 p.m., Thursday, March 3 in the Herman Maril Gallery, First Floor Art/Sociology Building.

Internationally recognized, New York based Luba Lukova is regarded as one of the most distinctive image-makers working today. Whether by using an economy of line, color, and text to pinpoint essential themes of the human condition or to succinctly illustrate social commentary, her work is undeniably powerful and thought provoking. The artist does not presume to decide for anyone what they should conclude from her images, rather she leaves it to the viewer to draw their own conclusions about each poster’s meaning… to create their own paths of change if they share her belief that action is not only necessary, it is just and it is right.

Luba Lukova’s solo exhibitions have been held at UNESCO, Paris; DDD Gallery, Osaka, Japan; La MaMa, New York; and The Art Institute of Boston. Her many awards include Grand Prix Savignac at the International Poster Salon, Paris; Golden Pencil at One Club, New York; Honor Laureate at the International Invitational Poster Exhibition, Fort Collins, CO; and Gold Medal at the International Poster Biennial, Mexico. She has received commissions from Time, Adobe Systems, Sony Music, Canon, Harvard University, Cultural Ministry of France, and the War Resisters League. Lukova’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Library of Congress; Bibliotheque nationale de France, Paris; and Centre de la Gravure et de l’Image imprime, La Louvière, Belgium. She is the author of the critically acclaimed Social Justice poster portfolio, containing passionate visual reactions to many of the pressing issues of out time. The collection has been exhibited around the world and was shown at the prestigious exhibit at the inauguration of President Obama in Washington, DC. Lukova’s new book, Graphic Guts, featuring her social commentary art, will be published this year.
